My family goes crazy when its blueberrie season. They have this obsession with blueberries that I just don't understand. I hate blueberries. To me, blueberries are like these little nasty blue tomatoes (which I also hate) that are sour and filled with crap. But for some odd reason, I love blueberrie pie.
The only problem being, that I had to pick my own blueberries in order to make pie, and it happened to be during a thunderstorm. I almost got struck by lightening a couple of times, but it was worth it. This pie was crazy good.
Blueberrie pie/ crumble
crust: (9")
- 1/3 cup plus 1 tbs butter
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbs sugar
- 4-5 tbs cold water
Cut butter into flour, salt, and sugar mixture until the particles are the size of small peas. Sprinkle water a tablespoon at a time untill mixture comes together. Gather pasty into a ball, and flatten into a disk. Let chill in the fridge.
Blueberrie mixture:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1/2 tsp cinn
- 4 cups blueberries
- 1 tbs lemon juice
- 2 tbs butter
- Heat oven to 425 degrees. Prepare pastry. Mix sugar, flour, and cinn (optional). Stir in blueberries. Turn into pastry lined pie plate. Sprinkle with lemon juice and dot with butter. Cover with crumb topping -->
Cover the edges of your pie with aluminum foil to prevent burning. Remove the last 15 min. of baking. Bake until crumble is golden brown, 35-45 min.
Crumb topping:
Baking and Books - 1 1/3 cup flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 3 tbs sugar
- 3 tbs raw sugar
- zest of one lemon
- 1 stick of butter at room temp.
Combine ingredients with a mixer or food processor.

Delicious! At first I thought "She's crazy! How can she not like blueberries?" But you're right; most blueberries by themselves aren't all that great, taste-wise and texture-wise. But somehow baking them in a pie or muffin makes them delicious.
I used to hate tomatoes, too, but somewhere in my 20s I started to appreciate them. Still can't stand most of the supermarket ones, raw, but fresh from the garden? Yum!
I didn't like blue berries at all either, then I was introduced to frozen blue berries, now I can't stop eating them! BTW, the pies looked oh-so good!
Glad you are back in the kitchen...how could hate blueberries! Hilarious.
Nice pie combo too!
Most of my kid life (and affecting my adult choices) I hated all fruit (except apples) and enjoyed fruit-flavored things (like koolaid or juice). But the tomatoes, I could live on them (and I couldn't live without them).
Your crust looks good - impressive and innovative!
i love the small ramakins with the blueberry crumble! and blueberries are so fresh (and cheap) right now! mmmm
I don't like sour blueberries either...but I'd willingly eat 10 sour ones for 1 or 2 delicious blueberries. I have a blueberry post coming up too! Also contemplating making a pie.
That looks gorgeous! But if I ever hear that you were blueberry picking in a thunder storm again, you are in so much trouble.
;)
I agree that blueberries tastes better in muffins, pies, cakes and not on it's own. It's just mildly sweet or sour.
Please don't risk your life plucking blueberries out in the storm.
Don't like blueberries? Are you insane? Your mother must be ashamed =). Strangely enough, I don't think I've ever had blueberry pie, but it certainly sounds delicious!
I've totally been wanting blueberry pie! I never liked blueberries before either, especially blueberry muffins! But now I love them and I can't wait to go blueberry picking! I think I just never had a good one or something? I don't know? Or maybe my taste changed? Who knows, weird though.
I want to eat your pie!
i am not a big fan of berries...but this pie looks so irresistable....yummmmmmmmmmmm! tempting!
Really? I love blueberries, I just can't find them here *sad, sad* I do understand braving the wrath of the gods to satisfy a craving tho' ;)
Jessy - almost struck by lightening to make a pie???
